Total Eclipse of the Moon

Well, it was spectacular, especially considering it was 24 degrees and I was watching it from a lighted parking lot very near a major (lighted) highway. Doesn't make for spectacular pictures, though, sad to say. But it was so worth the cold!

Tonight, I left school at the same time I did last night when the moon was so nearly full that I knew it was going to be a challenging day today. In fact, I said as much to a colleague as I pointed the moon out to him when we left. "Beware the moon!" I said.

Tonight, I left school once again admiring the moon, after a somewhat hellacious morning (yes, the moon was to blame). I looked at the dark sky that cradled a brilliant moon and couldn't wait to watch the eclipse, hoping that it would be more than a pinprick in the midst of blackness when I tried to photograph it.

No such luck. Still, it was beautiful. I watched it take place while talking on my cell with my parents. They were watching 85 miles north of me in Maine. We saw the same beautiful red slowly slide across the pale yellow until the eclipse was complete (my mom's photo at the top of the page).

Breathless, chilled, I couldn't take my eyes off what my camera could not begin to capture...

I also enjoyed the eclipse last evening, continually going out on my front porch to observe the progress. We also had another type of excitement! Two mornings ago a meteorite fell in the mountains near our cabin. It's light-flash and the sonic boom were heard for miles and miles away. Reports of it's effects (light and sound) were seen as far north as Calgary and as far south as Phoenix. Everyone is talking about it. Alas, I'm a sound sleeper and missed all the action! LOL!

Pictures couldn't capture the feeling of that eclipse, even the best of high powered cameras. Glad you got some shots though. I was thinking how awesome and terrifying that sight would have been in centuries past when people did not understand what was happening. "Beware the moon..."

Wasn't the moon wonderful . . . I enjoyed watching it from the car and was amazing! And cold! Everyone is talking about how cold it was!

it was amazing ! We had some cloud cover at times but at the most dramtic moments the sky co-operated. Emery and I were outside working on fencing during the entire eclipse.
My father always said it was going to be a tough night when it was a full moon and he had lots of experience with it as a police officer !

la tea dah--That's amazing! Too bad you missed it =(

Ruth--yes, I imagine you are right. It must have been quite frightening.

Monarch--you really got an air show: owls and the moon!

Patty--no cold for you?! Must have been a bright night to be working outside at that time...
